On a windy evening in early 1992 Peter Carlson found himself at a blues club in downtown Chicago. Performing that night was a short, powerful, savvy blues singer and harp player named Junior Wells. The evening was a turning point in Peter’s life. He was enthralled with Junior’s charisma, his sense of humor - and his bodacious raw-boned talent. Peter introduced himself, bought Junior a drink and they quickly became friends. What began as a casual friendship turned into a business partnership; the rest is history. One month later, Peter took his Sony video cameras on the road with Junior and started filming his performances.
Peter eventually produced and filmed Junior’s life story, “Don’t Start Me Talkin’”, a labor of love seven years in the making. That was the beginning of Peter’s stellar career in Blues & Gospel music production – one that has led his company, Sagebrush Productions, to a top position as a production entity for Sony Music, BET and other national and international cable networks.
To celebrate the release of the DVD of Junior’s life story, “Don’t Start Me Talkin’”, Sony Music hosted a blues reunion at The Kingston Mines, one of Junior’s favorite blues haunts in Chicago. On March 31, 2004, a legion of blues legends gathered there to honor Junior Wells and his music, and to pay tribute to his friend and producer, Peter Carlson. Peter and his associates, Nancy Nielsen and Larry Fienstien, took 4 Fender Squire Stratocasters to the Windy City and obtained signatures from a host of blues players. Their signatures where documented in photo albums contained in the guitar cases. Over the next few years many GREAT Blues Artist have signed the Guitars ie. Kieth Richards, Ronnie Wood, Steven Seagal, Pinetop Perkins, Bobby Rush, Magic Slim, Taj Mahal and many others.
These Guitars and 3 more have been donated to non-profit groups around the country. Including:
The Bobby Unser Jr. foundation
Morgan Freeman foundation for Katrina relief
The Buckaroo Ball for needy children in NM
The Blues Foundation Heart Fund
It has been an enormous pleasure putting this project together. We hope that it will be treasured and enjoyed by many generation of blues lovers to come…..
